DUAL ENROLLMENT
1. Finish cultural literacy/Greek idiomatic expression vocab....
2. "In the Twilight" by Wallace Stegner
-begin reading story together...we did not finish...this is okay...we will finish on Thursday (I collected the stories back because I need them for another class)
3. Short Story test will be on Thursday! Remember:
-study your notes and study guides for the stories we read
-pay close attention to how we discussed literary devices in these stories
-the test will be two parted: a matching section (characters, terms, etc) and a section where you apply your knowledge of literary devices to a story of your choice

Today we did an alternate plan due to the early release and the amount of absences....we did not continue with our grammar/composition 'stuff' and we will continue on Wednesday (you will have a quiz on Friday)....Instead, we did word games/trivia/word riddles....See me with any questions!

1. Vocab quiz--you may use your image sheets from last time's review! Fun!
2. "Red Badge"
-discussion on realism stereotypes in pop culture
-work on completing 'chart' of stereotypes
-paper assigned: Compare THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE to a modern example of 'realism.' What piece of 'modern literature' (book....tv episode...film...music) is truly an example of 'realism?' Use at least three of the stereotypes on the chart we did to support your argument! You were given time to work on this at the end of class, and the paper is due on TUESDAY

-background on Carver's writing style
-split class up to read either "The Student's Wife" or "Night School"
-each group should summarize the story AND try to make inferences on the characters and their personal problems

-continue with verbs and adjectives
-ex 7 page 106 to id verbs...
-adjective notes, predicate adjective notes
-ex 9 page 108 to revise sentences
-'would you rathers' to write sentences with predicate adjectives, etc...we worked on writing well crafted sentences...
-no homework tonight...on Thursday, you will be assigned a composition where you will put this grammar stuff into practice!

-go over story with notes on symbolism, typological names, etc etc
-closure to conversation about traditions that might seem offensive, unnecessary, etc...and how this relates to the story
2. "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White
-collect compositions about a predominant literary device in the essay
-go over some of the essay...talk about conflicts involved, the idea of 'place,' etc...
3. No reading for tonight...we will begin our next two stories on Wednesday

-there is no homework assignment...we will continue with the writing on Tuesday!

-read story together and do 'thought questions'
-discussion points in groups: Do we have any weird traditions, as a culture, that just do not make sense? How/when can a tradition be harmful to a culture? Explain
-share responses, etc
-I collected the stories, but please bring the thought questions back on Monday so we can discuss the story
2. "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White
-read the story on line OR come see me and get a paper copy
-What is a prevailing literary device used by White in this essay? Craft a response!

-we will have a test on the book on Monday....you should at the very least read the SparksNotes summaries, etc. You MAY NOT use your notes on this. The Test will be true/false, matching, short answer, etc. It will also have some of our more recent RED BADGE vocab on it!! STUDY! (but, if you check this blog regularly, you probably already DO study...so great job!)
