Thanks for subbing for me today. My schedule and plans are as follows:

BLOCK 1-This is my free period. Relax.

BLOCK 2-This is a senior “college composition” class. This group of seniors is reading BEOWULF. Please have them read section 2 of BEOWULF (The battle with Grendel's mother) and actively take notes on the following as they read a) examples that show Beowulf's arrogance b) how Beowulf displays 'superhuman' characteristics in this section c) details to show the difference between this fight and the original fight with Grendel. They should take a good deal of notes as they read, and please tell them I will collect this on Thursday. Would you also remind the class that they have their vocab (cultural literacy) test on Thursday and they will need to know how to use the terms in sentences AND they will have to know the 'backstory' of the phrases. Thanks

BLOCK 2- Senior CP English. Small class. They are reading THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Last time they copied a character list off the board. For extra credit points, they might “fill in” some of the characters themselves (we did not do this last time). I will complete the character list with them when I return. Also, they have a paper that is due today. Please DO NOT collect it...I will collect it when I return. They may use the time to work on the paper if they did not finish it. Finally, I would ask that they read the next thirty pages (or as close as that is to the end of a chapter) for Friday's class. Thanks!

LUNCH

BLOCK 3-Freshmen CP English. A good class...a couple of 'enthusiastic' kids in Cody and Logan. Sometimes Nick gets involved. All three are harmless...but feel free to separate them if they become an issue. I have two things for this class to do. They got new vocab words for I AM THE CHEESE (book they are reading) last time. Please have them write their vocab words in sentences. I will check this off for a participation grade when I return. Secondly, on my desk with the laptop on it, you will find a sheet with three or four 'thought questions' for the the chapters they were supposed to read. Please give this sheet out to the class and have them complete it. Please do not collect it...I will get it from them when I return. There is NO new reading assignment...they should take advantage of the time to CATCH UP. Also, there vocab test is Friday....

BLOCK 4-College Composition/Honors Senior English. This class is reading THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO as well (just like the CP class). I would like this class to do the following two things. First of all, you can assign them to read through chapter 37 of the story (tell them this is a longer assignment, but they have all of class today to work on it as well....) Also, I would like you to pass out the photocopied sheets that contain their next writing assignment—the paper is labeled 'Count of Monte Cristo' writing assignment...it deals with the notion of a “Renaissance Man.” Please give each student one of these and tell them it will be due next week and I will touch base with them about it on Friday.

Thank you again for subbing for me today. If you have any issues, please see Dave Lachapelle (outside my room and to the left) or Ellen Tello (dept chair) whose room is right beside Dave's. Thanks again!

SUB PLANS FOR MONDAY FEB 2

Sub Plans for Jared Goldsmith
Monday February 2, 2015

BLOCK 1: Study Hall. In my room. These kids know the drill. They are to work quietly. They need to take the pass/sign out if they are going anywhere. The signet list is on the clipboard on top of the file cabinet at the front of my room. Please note per the sub folder that these students leave at about 830 for the Tech Center. At this time, you go down to room 308 (go past the auditorium...it is the room on your right before the art room) to cover for Mark Cooper's Academic Support Lab. You stay there until the end of the period to cover for him.

BLOCK 2: College Prep English 12. This class is finishing up HAMLET and please tell them that I will be showing them acts 4 and 5 of the film starting Wednesday. For today, I would like them to work on an essay I told them about last week. They should have the “Faces Chart” handout, but if they do not, please see the pile I have on my desk and give them one. They should know that the assignment is to 'assign' a prevalent mood to the character of Hamlet (they should focus on his actions in act 3, but they can use the whole play if they want) and write an essay supporting this argument. For example, a good thesis statement, tell them, would be “In act 3 of the play, Hamlet's most prevalent mood is that of 'exasperated'” or something such as this. They are to provide at least three quotes from the play to support their argument. They may use their books to do this, obviously...but you might also offer them the computers—they can go on youtube.com and view clips of the film we have been watching, etc. They can have the entire block to use for this writing assignment. Please tell them that I will collect it on Friday. Thank you!!

(eat lunch)

BLOCK 3: College Prep English 9. This class had an assignment due on the chapter called “The Dog Star.” Please first tell the class that I will collect this assignment next class! For today's class, I would like them to focus on two things: Number one, they may finish any parts they have of this assignment, as it will be graded. (please note—I put this assignment on the board and my blog last time...kids can refer to that if they have questions). The second thing I would like them to do is to FINISH to book (they only have about another chapter in THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE TREE). For an extra credit bonus opportunity, if they write at least a half page reaction/opinion/summary of the final chapters, I will give them an A on a quiz! If they finish these two things (they should be pretty busy all class) they may read or work silently.

BLOCK 4: Honors English 12/College Composition-This class should follow the plan for Block 1 please. NOTE** Please make sure that, at the end of the day, that the kids make sure the computers are PLUGGED IN. Thank you!!!! Please note that this class has their papers due WEDNESDAY (which is next class).

Please see Dave Lachapelle should you have any questions. He will help you out. His room is just outside my door, and to the left. Thanks again!!

ALSO, you can tell kids that if they have any questions, I will be posting these sub plans on my classroom web site, which is www.goldsmithenglish.blogpost.com. Thanks again!

BLACK DAY-SUB PLANS!!!

Dearest students, I am out this morning at an appointment. Here are the plans I have left with the sub, FYI. Have a great day!!!!

******

BLOCK 1: Junior College Prep English: Today is an early release, so all classes are shortened from their usual length. Please explain to my junior class that I will go over midyear exams with them first thing next class. For today's class, please write down the following vocabulary words on the board. The students can use either their smartphone devices OR the Macbooks in the cart in the back of my room to look up the words and write definitions. Please tell them that this quiz will be next week, either Wednesday or Thursday. After they are done with the words, they can work on other work. Thank you!

  1. clairvoyant
  2. condescending
  3. censure
  4. ephemeral
  5. rancorous
  6. prudent
  7. sagacity
  8. submissive
  9. eloquent
  10. vindicate
  11. intrepid
  12. diligent
  13. discredit
  14. hackneyed
  15. frugal
  16. assiduous
  17. benevolent
  18. arid
  19. antagonist

BLOCK 2: Creative Writing/elective: Creative writing is a semester long, elective course. The class technically started this past Tuesday (that was the first Black day of the quarter), but, since we had a snow day this past Tuesday, TODAY would be the first time these students are in my room...haha...and I am not here. I have not 'begun' class with these kids yet, therefore I am hard pressed to have any work for them to do—we havent 'started' anything. Since today is an early release/shortened class, please tell the students that they may either work on other work they have for their other classes, OR spend the time doing something related to creative writing (perhaps they would like to read for pleasure, write in their journals, etc etc). If students are truly hard pressed to find something to do, please direct them to my collection of 'Reader's Digest” magazines (in the back of my room on the metal bookshelves....the one closest to the front of the room has them) and have them explore the various ways writers 'write' in these editions. Thank you!!

PLEASE NOTE: I told the office I am only taking a half a sick day today due to my appointment. I should be back, at the very latest, by the end of block 2. Block 3 is lunch duty in the cafe and Block 4 is my free period, by the way. Thank you very much. Should you have any questions, please see Dave Lachapelle (go out my door, bang a left and he is around the corner! Thanks!)

ALSO: I am posting these sub plans on my classroom blog, which is www.goldsmithclass.blogspot.com (just in case the kids had any questions, or some were absent, etc)
