BLACK DAY

COLLEGE ENGLISH

At this point, we are done reading the "book" part of HAMLET, but we are continuing with the "film" portion as we count down the days until I leave for surgery. Pay attention--as we watch--to how THE THEME OF APPEARANCE VS REALITY EXISTS IN THE PLAY. This is what I am asking you to write about. Your composition for HAMLET is as follows:

Describe how the theme of Appearance vs Reality exists in the play HAMLET.

What "seems" real and genuine but isn't....and vice versa??

How are some relationships between the characters 'phony' or two sided?

Is everything in the castle of Elsinore as it seems?

Some possible, doable, modelable (is that a word?? haha) thesis statements would be:

Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia reveals the theme of appearance vs reality because he is never truly honest with how he feels towards her

OR

The theme of appearance versus reality is revealed in HAMLET through the dysfunctional behaviors of Laertes, Polonius, and Ophelia

OR

Hamlet expresses the theme of appearance vs reality by the way he deals with anger, love, and joy

OR

______, _______, and ______ are three characters who help convey the theme of appearance vs reality in HAMLET due to their shifty and shady behaviors in the play

Use your brains. This is a THINKING SORT OF PROMPT. It might seem difficult at first....but let the prompt sink in...I think you will find that you will start making connections.....be the fantastic college writer that I know you are!!!!

Friday, February 16, 2018

ORANGE DAY

Today in class I passed back the written dramatic situations....

We took a four question reading check quiz on the section you were supposed to read for today (see the previous blog entry for the page section, etc)

We continued the film, pointing out sections that were rich in revealing the theme of APPEARANCE VERSUS REALITY in the play. Remember, your composition for the end of the play is to write about the theme of appearance vs reality is expressed or revealed in the play....

ORANGE DAY PART 2

COLLEGE ENGLISH

**NOTE**

Every observation you make from this point on in the play should be about how Shakespeare reveals the theme of Appearance versus Reality!! Today we read sections of Act 3.1 and 3.2. You have a reading assignment to do for Friday. Please read from line 290 until the end of scene 2....and then read in scene 3 UP TO line 75....

you MIGHT be given a short reading check quiz on Friday!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Please see yesterday (Orange Day) plan...you folks have the same assignment....

If you have any questions about how to write your dramatic situation quote in PARAGRAPH form rather than MAPPED OUT form, please come see me!!!

Monday, February 12, 2018

ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we went over all the vocabulary words that you were to look up with the sub last time....you will have this test on Friday

We then wrote a composition, and you had two choices:

a) IN BEOWULF, THE MONSTER GRENDEL REPRESENTED ALL THAT WAS EVIL IN THE WORLD DURING THAT TIME. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE TRUE NATURE OF EVIL IN THE WORLD?

b) IF YOU COULD PICK ONE SUPERHERO POWER, WOULD IT BE A) ABILITY TO FLY B) BEING INVISIBLE C) SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH D) X-RAY VISION?

COLLEGE ENGLISH

NOTE** If you have not passed in your dramatic situation web from last time, you can still pass it in for half credit.

1. HAMLET
-quick film clip/discussion of "the players" as they appear towards the end of Act 2
-discussion and notes on "psychological association" and how Hamlet will use this to his advantage
-read, on your own, the final soliloquy of Act 2 ("O what a rogue and peasant slave am I!") and choose a line (on your own) that you think is important/significant enough to use to create a dramatic situation...write it out in paragraph (not web) form!!!

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we read part 3 (The Death Of Beowulf) and took an open book test on it after...we began the section together and you were asked to read the last two pages on your own....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

A reminder that your book talks are to be presented this Thursday!

We viewed/took notes on Act 2 of HAMLET up until "the players" started to arrive onto the scene...
MAKE SURE TO GET NOTES you missed!!!

I passed out a blank "dramatic situation" web and I passed out a sheet containing 6 quotes from the section we watched/read today....your assignment is to pick one of those 6 quotes---or choose another quote from the reading today--and "map out" a dramatic situation web for it. NOTE: You might find it helpful to look in your books from pages 97-105 for clarification...or you can compare those to the "modern English" on the NO FEAR site

Monday, February 5, 2018

Today we went over the first part of BEOWULF--particularly, we discussed WHY Grendel was left alive, and what this says about the arrogance of the character of Beowulf...

We began reading the second section "The Battle with Grendel's Mother" together as a class....there was a study guide that went along with this section...you were to do the study guide while we read along....we did not finish the ENTIRE section, so we will finish the last page and a half on Thursday

Everyone did an EXCELLENT job today!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Reminder of your book talk next Thursday!

1. HAMLET
-take character matching quiz
-assign parts and read aloud Act 2.2 taking notes as we go....we stopped right before Polonius was about to interrupt Hamlet as Hamlet was walking around reading his book....
