-introduce story and discuss 'contrasting images'
4. TAKE NOTE: Many of you missed class today due to the college fair...please be sure to come see me and make up your vocab test ASAP. ALSO, make sure you copy the notes we took for our latest story, as they will help you on the test we take...
5. TAKE NOTE ALSO of the fact that you do not have to read THE LOTTERY for Wednesday...with so many folks out, we will just read it in class on Thursday...

JUNIOR ENGLISH

1. "Red Badge"
-read chapter 20 aloud and on own....
-take notes of three times (quotes) you see Henry's 'thoughts,' and explain what is going on
-I summarized chapt 21 for you...you do not need to read that one
-please read ch 22 through the end of the book for next class!

-"red badge" list number 3 was started...we did not finish and we will do so on Thursday

1. Today in class we continued to view "The Goonies" as evidence of an 'epic hero' story...remember to take notes as you watch as to how the film contains several of the 'epic hero stereotypes' we discussed/took notes on in class
2. There is no hw assignment...we will finish the film on Wednesday, and we will begin some grammar writing review before getting into our next book....

1. Go over "A & P" story with notes and discussion of literary devices in story
2. Collect responses done for "A &P"
3. Begin "The End of Something" by Ernest Hemingway
-background notes on Hemingway's style
-discussion of items that might be symbolic in the story
block2-write about how the items we listed on the board might be symbolism
block 3-overall, write a paragraph (not to be graded) commentary on the symbolism
4. Reminder that the vocab quiz is on Tuesday!!

1. Pass out PSAT stuff, discuss Accuplacer, PSAT, etc

1. Finish vocab words (if applicable) for test that will be next TUESDAY
2. Connotation vs denotation activity and review in class...
3. "A&P" by John Updike
-introduce story with "The House" activity
-discuss the idea of 'perceptions'
-read story (find on line)
-respond to the following prompt: A&P is largely a story about perceptions, meaning that what Sammy PERCEIVES affects his decision to be rational (in his mind) or irrational (perhaps in our minds). Explain how Sammy's perceptions are the main cause and inspiration for him to make the decision he makes in the story. How does what he SEES affects his actions. You should also address the question as to if he made a foolish--or not foolish--decision based on these perceptions.

-writing prompt/discussion about 'envy' and what you are envious of...
-summary of chapter 15 (you didnt have to read this)
-begin reading in class...your assignment is to read chapters 16, 17, 18, and 19
-there will be a quiz on these chapters!
-please do the study guide questions for this group of chapters, as some of the questions may come right off the study guide!

2. We did our first vocab list today (block 4 did not finish the list) and this quiz will be next TUESDAY...in addition to the vocab words, there was much discussion on 'connotation' and 'denotation' and how 'cultural literacy' is used to generate our words lists...

1. Reminder that vocab quiz is on WEDNESDAY

-check off 8-11 study guides for participation grades
-writing in class prompt: How do the people (or a person) Henry meets in chapt 8-11 have an effect on him? How do they make him feel? Show me that you read by writing a clear and detailed paragraph"
-discuss the responses to this prompt...go over 'the color red' and 'foil' in this section, along with the "tattered man" and the "spectral soldier"!
-begin reading chapters 12 through 14 in class...be sure to read this for next time....and be sure to answer the pertinent study guide questions!

-finish last two 'hero convention stereotypes'
-be sure you have taken the notes for all of this, as it will help you on the paper
-do next worksheet/graphic organizer of "Epic hero elements" and go over the examples in class
-assign paper:
       COMPARE OR CONTRAST THE CHARACTER OF BEOWULF TO A MODERN DAY
       HERO OF YOUR CHOICE. IN DOING SO, YOU MUST USE AT LEAST THREE 'EPIC
       HERO STEREOTYPES' (LOOK AT YOUR NOTES) TO STATE YOUR CASE. HOW IS
       BEOWULF LIKE A MODERN DAY HERO? HOW IS HE UNLIKE? CHOOSE ONE
       POSITION TO TAKE.

we worked through some ways in which to do this (written on board) by organizing the answer into three solid paragraphs, etc...
-REMEMBER that this paper is due on THURSDAY of next week
-on MONDAY you have the Beowulf TEST (on the history, notes, and everything we read)...you may use notes on this

-we read and discussed some from chapter 8...your job is to finish the reading assignment through chapter 11 and do the questions...these will be collected!

1. Touch base about guidance's visit to our class last time...
2. BEOWULF
-take quiz on "Death of Beowulf" section
-go over quiz/section of BEOWULF...take good notes!
-begin discussion of genres and genre stereotypes (horror, romantic comedy, etc)
-narrow the focus to epic hero stories, and discuss how they share common stereotypes...this is an important set of notes, because you will be writing your BEOWULF paper based on these stereotypes....
-be prepared to share your "hero of choice" in class (real quick) on Friday....what "stereotype" do they share?

-hear examples of your own from information map

-assign 'literary terms' paper--this is due for both sections next THURSDAY

JUNIOR COLLEGE PREP

-go over chapters 3-5 with study guide and 'identifications'
-make sure you understand HOW to do identifications, as we will use these throughout the year
-we did not get to read together in class, but we will do more on Tuesday...
-please read chapters 6, 7, and 8 for next time
-we will have a TEST ON TUESDAY that will entail everything from Stephen Crane notes, Realism notes, and everything from chapters 1 through 8.....make sure to read and look over your study guides, etc....

-begin section 3 of Beowulf "death of Beowulf" and finish this section for next class
-for next time, please research a 'hero' of your choice (can be a person like a coach, soldier, grandparent...or you can totally take the other route and go Batman, Superman, etc etc..) and jot down that hero's a) secret/special weapon b) arch enemy....
-please remember: I will be giving you a short quiz on "the death of Beowulf" on Monday!

-write two paragraphs as written on board a) Write and describe how colors are used in the first two chapters...what role do you think they play? b) Write a paragraph describing the types of moods and emotions Henry feels in the first two chapters...this is to be a participation grade....
-go over chapters 1 and 2 with guided questions, etc
-begin reading at chapter 3....please read chapters 3, 4, and 5 for Friday! I will give a bonus/extra credit question on the vocab test having to do with the reading!!!

-begin reading the short story by William Faulkner (finish by finding it on line!)
-take notes on the following a) after you finish, what are the CLUES that tell you all along what was happening? b) what type of character is Emily? What is she like? Give me some good opinions and descriptions!

Today we took notes on the types of vocab we will do this year....we paid special attention to the differences between CONNOTATION and DENOTATION and what they mean....we talked about cultural literacy and its role in our vocab this year....we took our first vocab list down today...we didnt finish the whole list, so we will finish next time...you should begin studying your words and learning the words, as we will have the quiz next week

Be sure to pick out a silent reading book for our ten minutes of silent reading....
