1. Well....we had four kids in class today....we put our plan on hold so we could continue on MOnday.....

-viewed Poe documentary///took notes
-briefly go over "Cask" and collect questions/notes on the story that were assigned for today

1. Paper (see last class blog for detailed assignment) is due on Monday
-discuss characters from short stories....their good qualities that stand out....
-emphasize need for good organization in paragraphs
-emphasize idea for two solid body paragraphs...one about the issue in the 'real world,' and the other about how the story/character you are using 'emphasizes' this point...
-see me if any questions!!
2. College Essay
-begin unit by going over description of personal narratives...look at different prompts
-be thinking of writing prompts your colleges are asking for!

-in addition, keep track, by making a list, of all the times Montressor gives Fortunado an opportunity to get out of going down to the catacombs

-discuss story via study guide and other notes (parallelism, catharsis, etc)
2. Paper topic assigned (final paper for short story unit) "Describe an incident where a seemingly positive quality--like loyalty, pride, love, innocence, etc--can become a life damaging flaw that damages lives? Use at least one of our short stories to make your argument.
-we worked, as a prewriting exercise, on taking each story we've read, isolating the main characters, and listing 2 or 3 of their 'best' virtues and characteristics...

-you must choose one of the following prompts a) Compare a character in A SEPARATE PEACE to a 'tree' of your choice. Trees play such a large role in the story; how then, metaphorically, are the different types of trees like different types of characters? b) Describe how nature (rivers, ice, snow, trees, the seasons, etc) plays a role in the telling of the story in A SEPARATE PEACE.

-discuss three aspects of the story a) things that are taboo in our culture/people who defy the status quo b) the character of Emily and how she goes against the status quo c) the clues/foreshadows/symbolic things that influence the story
3. Please read Hemingway's "The End of Something" for class next time....in addition, please think about three instances of symbolism in this short piece. It is a very short story....but it is FULL of symbolic objects that can be 'looked into further.' Put on your thinking cap...think outside the box...give it a try.....

-write about contrasting images in story....
-discuss story as a whole...talk about symbolism and typological names....
-assign paper that will be due next WEDNESDAY: Think about traditions, such as the tradition of "The Lottery." Many things we do in our culture and society are harmful, meaningless, or obsolete. How can traditions be 'bad' in our culture? How can they (intentionally or unintentionally) be harmful, meaningless, obsolete, or offensive?

-discuss story... "land novel" definition, etc
-do in class 'test' (NOTE: this is not a test, necessarily....it is a participation grade to help us talk about the story....)and finish it for Monday!

-discussed the idea of CONTRASTING IMAGES and how the author will use them to create a tone of horror or suspense or unrest....
-your response for Tuesday is to explain, in lots of detail, 2 ways in which Shirley Jackson uses contrasting images in the story. What is the IMAGE she gives in her writing?? And how does this sort of CONTRAST with the REALITY of the story? It is a complicated idea, so see me if you have questions. Remember, you are a college class!!!

-discuss story--go over certain literary devices...go over quiz
-in class partner work, charting out the DIFFERENCES between the father and the teacher (in a Venn Diagram sort of way)
-discuss responses
-for next class: COMPARE THE SIMILARITIES of the father and the professor in the story...what three specific things (at least 3) do they share in common? How are the two alike? (I am looking for about a full page of writing here....you should start off your paragraphs with a sentence that reads something like The father and the teacher in SPLIT CHERRY TREE are similar because they _____, ________, and ________)

HONORS/COLLEGE COMP

-discuss idea of choosing to live in seclusion....what would be the physiological and mental effects?

-please chart out a "continuum" for the story....the lawyer undergoes many changes in the story....chart a continuum that shows the five most influential events that contribute to this 'change' in the character...

-we had a test on chapters 5 through 9 today...
-we discussed parts of chapter 9 and took notes
-we began chapter 10 together...your job is to finish chapter 10 AND take notes (as in WRITE DOWN) how we, again, see 'nature' being used in the story....and, also, please, in a couple of sentences or so, explain if you think Gene is a 'noble' character for the way in which he treats Leper. Is he good? Has he 'redeemed' himself by helping Leper? DID he even HELP Leper? All your opinion
