ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we did a "Prentice Hall Info Text Reading Test" in class....actually, we did two of them...we read the excerpts and answered questions....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we reviewed vocab by QUICKLY using five of our words in sentences--each sentence MUST contain a semicolon....we shared these verbally as part of your participation grade

We took some notes on Action Vs Linking verbs, and did the first exercise on page 106....

For Tuesday, you have two things:

1. Your vocab test on Greek mythology words
2. Your WRITTEN OUT, sentence combined, much improved paragraph that begins with "Grammar is so stupid....."

ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we did an open book "O.W.L." homonym test....and then we went over it....students made corrections as needed...

To prepare for our "mythology vocab" test, we chose ten words and put them in sentences.....BUT, each sentence had to contain a semicolon (since we have been talking about sentence combining in our writing...).

COLLEGE ENGLISH

First, I passed back work!

We BRIEFLY went over the "Lesson 32" sheet with semicolons and sentence combining....then we worked on the "I wanted to tell you" worksheet, where there were three paragraphs written poorly...the first two we did as a class activity...you are asked to RE-WRITE the "Thomas P. Cat" paragraph for a GRADE...re-write the paragraph in as FEW sentences as possible...combine with commas, semicolons, colons, etc!

Writing prompt: WHERE DO YOU WANT TO LIVE SOMEDAY, AND WHY?  Please be sure to include TWO sentences with commas and TWO sentences using semicolons correctly

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we went over the "exercise 4" worksheet dealing with commas....

We took notes on how to use semicolons and colons correctly in order to increase sentence fluency...

We did "Lesson 75" worksheet as a practice worksheet....we went over this in class...

"Lesson 32" (both sides) should be done for Monday's class; we will go over them and grade them!!

A reminder to check IC to see if you are missing stuff! A 65 is better than a 0!!!

a. explain the importance of taking notes, as eventually they will be collected
b. notes on comma rules, etc
c. notes on Independent and Dependent clauses
d. comma worksheet for practice/go over together
e. comma worksheet to be graded as "test."

2. Your OWL test will be next Wednesday!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

2. Reminder about book talks: April 5-Fri
3. You will have your GREEK ROOTS test on Monday after the film....be sure to FIND AT LEAST TWO "real words" that we DIDN'T go over (that have Greek Roots....obviously) so you can use them in sentences

Today we finished the rest of our O.W.L. word list....there was a two sided worksheet that we did in class...it was collected for a participation grade....PLEASE be sure to bring a notebook because we will be taking notes next time

We finished the five or six root words that we did not finish last time...you should be studying these in your own time
a. the root definition
b. how to use the WORDS I gave you in a sentence
c. find your own ADDITIONAL root words

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Your paper was due today!! We will begin the film on Wednesday!! Today we followed the black day plan: We took notes on Greek root words. Remember,, for the test, to know:

a. what the ROOT means
b. how to use the word I gave you with that root CORRECTLY
c. a word of your own choice that contains that Greek root (for example, for CHRONO, the word I gave you was CHRONOGRAPH.....but you might choose CHRONOLOGICAL for your own word....)

Today in class, you were given the first 25 minutes to finish writing your composition:

" How does the character of Mikey fit the elements of an Epic Hero story?  Use at least three examples from the film that match up with your EPIC HERO ELEMENTS worksheet "

We began a list of O.W.Ls (ongoing writing list) of homonyms and commonly misused words...we will finish the list next time.....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today, we took time to work on either finishing the book OR writing your composition! Think about what your "philosopher" and The Count share in terms of their views on:

love
forgiveness
hatred
prejudice
inclusion
patience
belonging
pride
sorrow
resentment

A good opening paragraph/thesis statement might be something such as:

The Count of Monte Cristo and the band COLDPLAY share similar views on love, patience, and forgiveness...

or

Eric Cartman and The Count are very similar in how they deal with their enemies....
