ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we went over the first part of BEOWULF--particularly, we discussed WHY Grendel was left alive, and what this says about the arrogance of the character of Beowulf...

We began reading the second section "The Battle with Grendel's Mother" together as a class....there was a study guide that went along with this section...you were to do the study guide while we read along....we did not finish the ENTIRE section, so we will finish the last page and a half on Thursday

Everyone did an EXCELLENT job today!

Reminder of your book talk next Thursday!

1. HAMLET
-take character matching quiz
-assign parts and read aloud Act 2.2 taking notes as we go....we stopped right before Polonius was about to interrupt Hamlet as Hamlet was walking around reading his book....

DIRECTIONS: I am asking you to give 3-5 minute book talk to the class. This can be on any book you have read outside of class. You may definitely use note cards, etc, but know that you should only use these as a guide, as part of your grade for this is on your ability to deliver a good public speech. You are graded in the following ways:

-Title, author, date of publication information given

Summary
-A brief summary of the story (don't re-tell the entire book!!!)
-What was it about?
-What information did you learn

Protagonist
-Who is the main character?
-Give your own description of this individual
-Explain what they are like

Character Quote
-Choose a quote or short passage from the story that you believe illustrates the protagonist well
-Why did you choose this quote?

Conflict
-What is the central conflict in the story?
-What type of conflict(s) is involved?

Setting
-Describe the setting of the story
-Why is this particular setting important to the story?

Personal Reaction
-What was your overall reaction to the book?
-What did you like? What did you dislike? Why?

Important Quote
-Pick out a short passage from the story that you would like to share with the class
-What was your reason for choosing this passage?

Literary Device
-Pick out at least one literary device used in the book, and explain how it is used

Quality of Presentation
-Presented clearly and audibly
-Appropriate length
-Minimal fidgetty/awkwardy stuff

Today in class we read BEOWULF section 1-- "The battle with Grendel"

After reading that section you had a choice to write:

"How does Beowulf show he is an arrogant character in the first section?"

or

"Describe, in detail, how the fight goes between the two entities"

COLLEGE ENGLISH

1, Vocabulary
-finish the root words
-your test will be next THURSDAY
-be sure you know the ROOTS and some words associated with them

2. HAMLET
-summarize the beginning of Act 2 scene 1 with notes (we didnt read it)
-Act out the part of Act 2 scene 1 where Ophelia re-tells her "Hamlet encounter" and take notes!
-Remember you have a MATCHING QUIZ next time!! You CANNOT use your notes!!!

Today in class we touched base about how the booktalks will now be presented on February 9th. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE

Please refer to yesterday's ORANGE DAY blog, as they are now one day ahead of you...we took notes on the last ten minutes of the film AND we started the Greek root vocab!!! Have a great weekend!!

Today in class we began our BEOWULF unit by taking notes on the history, etc of the story of BEOWULF....we watched a 15 minute documentary on the history of the story...we will continue with the reading next time!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

1. Go over MT exam!
2 Book talk date has been changed to FEBRUARY 8!!!
3. HAMLET
-finish Act I of the film and take notes on important details!
4. Greek Root Vocab
-begin taking notes on the Greek roots...we will finish them next time! I will tell you when the test is next time!

Today we went over all the missing grades for Q2...get your work in!!

We went over what the midterm will consist of

I. A vocab section where you will be given words to look up, learn, and use CORRECTLY in sentences

II. There will be a short story to read and there will be questions to answer on this short story

2. HAMLET--We viewed Act 1 of the film and I stressed the importance of TAKING GOOD NOTES!!!!!!! You will be able to use these notes on the midterm exam...

Today you were given the vocabulary list of words that you are expected to look up for the midterm exam....please look these up on your own...we will go over any questions you have on Friday (NOTE: we will NOT be going over the list word by word.....)

We read together (and on your own) Act 1 Scene 3 and took notes on the study guide I handed out...the study guide was collected to be graded as a participation grade!!

We will view Act 1 of the film on Friday!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

1. HAMLET
-take notes on soliloquies and how they work within drama
-use Chromebooks/devices to read--together--the first part of Act 1 Scene 2 and discuss...
-NOTE: This was done utilizing NO FEAR SHAKESPEARE online, where we could see both the Elizabethan AND modern English lines together...
-you were asked to read the rest of the scene on your own, and give the "Elizabethan" equivalent of at least three items on the Act 2 Scene 2 study guide!

Today HAMLET books were distributed. I still encourage you to get your own copy of the FOLGER edition of HAMLET...you will be happy you did!!!

I passed out a double sided study guide for scene 1 and 2 of Act 1....ANYTIME YOU ARE OUT you should remember to copy missed notes and get missed study guides from the rack on the side counter!

We read aloud (thank you volunteers!!!!) Act 1 Scene 1 and students completed the "study notes" as we went along....

I will be out Thursday (pending that we do not have a snowday) and I will leave sub plans for you to read Act 2 scene 2...
