Today we worked in HEROES, starting on page 116, and we read a bit together...you were asked to read the rest of the book in class today AND finish the 'open book' test that contains questions on your interpretation of the ending, etc


DUAL ENROLLMENT **From Friday**

Hi folks. I am sorry that I forgot to post 'quotes' for you to choose on Friday. Remember, your assignment was to read Hamlet's final soliloquy of Act 2 and write me about a half a page response that articulates what you think the quote means to the 'bigger picture' of what is going on. You can choose your own, or use:

"O what a rogue and peasant slave am I"

"I am pigeon livered and lack gall"

"I must...like a whore....unpack my heart with words"

"the play's the thing"

1. HEROES
-for the first half of class, we worked on the writing-on-demand composition about what we 'have the right to do.' See me if you missed it and I can get you the sheet of paper with the assignment on it
-we began reading on page 104 and read/discussed until about 111 or so...we did not finish the book...we will do that in class on Monday, and there will be an 'open book' test on your interpretation of the ending....

1. HEROES
-read together pages 86-104 and discuss the scene as a class...for your participation grade today, I asked you to do a detailed PointQuestionConnect to the chapters....I also asked you to explain 1) why does Francis REALLY join the army? and 2) Why does Nicole say 'poor Francis' and what does that mean?

Remember, there have been MANY participation grades for this book unit....and few 'test' grades...see me if you missed any of this stuff

1. New vocab list on Greek roots....you should know the definition of all the Greek roots for the test on FRIDAY...in addition, you should be able to use an original word for each root, as you will be asked to do this on the test
2. Writing: Comma usage
-began discussing sentence combining and enhancing with commas
-as a 'pretest' just do the exercise 4 in class to see where you 'are' with this sentence combining strategy

DUAL ENROLLMENT

1. HAMLET
-review Act 2.1...make sure to understand everything on that study guide
-read Act 2.2 sections together, completing study guide that goes along with it
-continue reading 2.2 where Polonius says "Fare you will, my lord" all the way until Polonius 'enters' the scene again saying "well be with you gentlemen"
-make sure to be able to explain/understand all the quotes on the study guide!
-you should probably expect a four question quiz on the reading (?????)

TOday we took the vocab quiz on the Greek root words we were studying....then we turned our attention back to HEROES...I read from page 69-74 ish....we discussed some of our connections...then, your job was to read on until page 85 AND complete a PointQuestionConnect worksheet for the chapters...Have a great vacation...

Today in class we finished "reading" the rest of Act 1 of the film...we then took the Act 1 matching test (open note) and went over it....we began to look at Act 2 scene 1....we will continue after vacation...

Today we finished with DeadPoetsSociety film...the tree/symbolism paper was due today...reminder to get it to me if you are using a tech day

Today in class we took some time to use root words (containing the roots we had this week) in writing detailed sentences....we went over these sentences...use your sentences to study for the test Friday

We began reading on page 58 of HEROES and continued reading aloud until page 68 where we stopped....you were encouraged to look for quotes that could be used to support that Francis is positively influenced by Larry...

Today we begin 'reading' Act 1 of the film...it is very important that you take good notes on the film as well as the play....we will finish Act 1 on Thursday and then take the OPEN NOTE test on Act 1

Also, we had our Shakespeare vocab quiz today

The composition due next class is to compare any character to a tree and show how they show the characteristics 'of' a certain type of tree...if you dont understand this, come see me!

We began DeadPoetsSociety viewing in class as a companion to A SEPARATE PEACE

Today we learned the POINT, QUESTION, CONNECT literature response strategy, and we practiced with an example of a film or show or book....

Then, we read aloud (and to ourselves) p 32-47 chapters in class

You were asked to hand in a POINT QUESTION CONNECT template (completed for that section) at the end of class!

DUAL ENROLLMENT

1. HAMLET
-collect paragraphs about the type of father Polonius is
-pass back sonnet papers
-extra credit...if you want you may memorize and recite ten lines from HAMLET orrrrr write an original sonnet
-study guide for 1.3....we went over this in class
-read 1.4 and take notes
2. Vocab test is Friday

NOTE: We ALWAYS will be taking a lot of notes with HAMLET. That is a 'given.' Always assume, if you miss class, that there are notes for you to get from a classmate

1. Vocabulary review 'test' and activity for test on Friday...
2. Symbolism lesson
-'information map' give regarding trees and features of trees (see me if you didnt get it)
-composition assigned and is due Tuesday of next week : "Explain how a character is symbolic of a certain type of tree...provide at lest two examples"

Today in class we read Chapter 2 of HEROES together and discussed the awkwardness of Francis' relationship with Nicole...then you were asked to read Chapter 3 of the book on your own. You were asked to write me at least a half a page--and using at least 2 quotes--describing Francis' 'mental' or 'emotional' state of mind....remember, you dont bring the books home, so we read all in class...
