Today we worked on a new set of vocabulary words designed to help you write about/talk about yourself in the event of writing a college essay, going on a job interview, etc. We worked on looking up the definitions on our own, and then we went over them as a class...we will finish the rest of going over them on Tuesday....the words were as follows:

COLLEGE ENGLISH

1. Personal Narrative/College Essay unit
-do "kite or clothesline" verbal activity....
-do "internal scavenger hunt" activity on own
-begin sharing (whip) around room to share some responses
-for next time, please write a ONE PAGE piece based on ANY of the categories/items IN a category...be sure it is rich in VOICE!!!! It will be graded as participation
-we revisited the rubric for the personal narrative, reiterating what VOICE is

Today we finished "Quitter's Inc" and went over parts of the study guide....on the TUESDAY you get back from break, we will have our short story test....all notes/stories can be used as guides!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Please be sure to pick one of the 20 "prompts" on the sheet and write at least 1/2 of a page--pretend that you are beginning to write the whole essay....how would you start???

Today we worked on finishing "Quitter's Inc" and completing the study guides, which were passed in to be graded! We will have our SHORT STORY TEST on MONDAY (but first we will take about 15 minutes to go over our most recent story!). Bring all your notes and study guides so you can use them on the test!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we went over the personalized sentences you were asked to write using your new "personal narrative" words....these were collected for a grade in participation!!! Next, we began talking about the nuts and bolts of a college essay....I gave out a doublesided sheet with some information on it...on one side of the sheet were about 20 prospective "prompts"......for next class, I would like you to pick your favorite prompt on that list, pretend you are going to write the essay....but only write the FIRST GOOD PARAGRAPH of it....these will be collected and graded for EFFORT, CREATIVITY, and PARTICIPATION!!!

Today we began the final story of our short story unit: "Quitters Inc" by Stephen King...we went over some important vocabulary for the story....a study guide was given as well....we began the story together and then we read it silently....we will finish the story next time....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we began the personal narrative/college essay unit by going over a vocab list of words that would be good to use for your writing!! We went over the definitions and examples....your assignment for next time is to write a sentence for each word--make YOURSELF the subject of all these sentences and describe yourself as you RELATE to each word!!! The words are as follows:

Today we finished working on the "PracticeTestPacket" that had the "spacecraft chart" on it....we went through the packet and went over the answers...it was collected as a participation grade

Today we "technically" began our personal narrative/college essay unit by taking some notes and doing a worksheet on the differences between connotation and denotation....next time we will discuss how this help us write better essays about ourselves

Today in class we worked on some practice "diagnostic" reading tests....this counted as the first participation grade of the second quarter!!!
