ORANGE DAY

1 College essay was due today--mark on your paper where you 'varied your sentence beginnings!
2. Cultural literacy
-introduce new phrases/idioms
-interview other students/staff/faculty to see what they know
-begin (but we did not finish) terms

COLLEGE PREP 11

1. Information Writing
-read newspaper article on history of Maine's paper mills
-identify topic sentence and enumerative paragraphs and subtopics
-write a 1/2 page summary of this article
-for next time, please write compose a piece of informational writing of your own addressing the prompt "Something very important to Maine." We discussed how snow, hunting, trees, cell phones, etc might be good ideas! Be sure to use two or three SUBTOPICS in your paper, and if you dont understand what I mean, come see me!

In today's class we viewed the "Bastogne" episode as a companion piece to the place we are at in the book....there is no reading assigned over vacation...enjoy

HOWEVER, block 3 was responsible for giving me the short writing prompt of the day "Describe the physical, mental, and emotional challenges the men are facing in the war. Use your book or the episode of BAND OF BROTHERS as an example"

-go over sentence variety worksheet
-give out MethodsOfElaboration rubrics and explain how to use them
-workshop college essays, filling out rubrics for self and others
-your college essay is due on the Monday we get back from vacation...please remember
   1. Begin with a Q.A.Q.S.
   2. Have clear evidence of voice
   3. Demonstrate at least three underlined examples of varied sentence beginnings (prepositional
       phrase, adjective phrase, or participle phrase....)

BOTH CLASSES**** Bring in a PRINTED OFF draft of your college essay...you will be working on it in class and there will be some revision stuff going on....you will be editing your own and you will be editing another paper

-research/discussion of "Geneva Convention" and its role in the story
-begin reading chapter 7 together in class...please finish this chapter....I get the sense that people are not reading, and therefore you should always expect a POP QUIZ...even if it is only two questions to check that you read  :/

-we will have a test on Monday on chapters 1 through 6...it will include all the notes/studyguide/terminology stuff we have done thus far in the book...you can NOT use your notes on this...

-for Friday, please bring in an introductory paragraph to your college essay...have it reflect one of the QAQS's....

We continued with college essay writing...focused on voice and activities to get us writing with more voice...we did the 'question game' and took turns talking to different people....we then had a 15 minute focused writing on ONE of the questions (pick any one you want) and include at least two vocab words from this week's list in it...We also focused on the college essay vocab and we took time to go over the sentences you were to write for today...reminder that the test is next TUESDAY!!!!

-do multiple choice practice 'test' and go over (good SAT practice, etc!)

Today in class we officially began reading THE LONGEST WINTER...we skipped chapter one, as I summarized it for you rather quickly...we began reading out loud for chapter 2, and a study guide was passed out to be completed while you read...time was given in class to get a good jump on the reading, and you should read the rest of chapter 2 for next time....in addition, I would like you to read chapter 3, as it is a rather short chapter...always expect a quizzzzzzz
