Today in class we read and discussed the essay "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White....there were questions that went along with this, and they were to be done in class along with reading the story....we discussed places in our lives that have "changed" since our childhoods, etc

Remember to keep rounding up your notes, since we will have our open-note short story test soon!

Today we began "The Goonies" film and I passed back compositions at the end of class....remember that if you are using a "tech day" you must get your paper to me ASAP....otherwise, it can only earn a 65 at the highest!!!

Today in class we read and discussed "The Monkey's Paw" and went over terms like "Talisman" and "irony"....we wrote about what the saying "be careful what you wish for" means....

Today in class we took our vocabulary quizzes.....we did not get to our next story--we will do this next time!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today in class your compositions were due....I hope they dont STINK (get it??? :/ )....I distributed the writing rubric and the "rules for writing" sheet and we went over WHAT is to be expected when you do a composition for class....

We will begin the epic hero film "Goonies" on Monday....

We began discussing connotation vs denotation as we started talking about words we can use to "sell ourselves" when we write college essays....

REMEMBER that your book talks are DUE TO BE PRESENTED on 10/31--as soon as "Goonies" is over, we will present those!!!

Today we began by reviewing vocabulary words and going around the room and answering questions....then we read an article entitled "The Science of Solitary Confinement" and answered the reading comprehension questions that followed the article....they were discussed and gone over

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today I quickly went over the "Beowulf" composition with you, handing out a graphic organizer to help conceptualize compare/contrast papers....I also gave you a sample from a paper from last year, so you could see how to go about writing this.....

After , the time was given to you so that you could work on your writing; we had a writer's workshop and I floated around, helping, etc!

Your paper is due Thursday. Relax!! Please be sure to print it out!

1. Vocab quiz is coming up on TUESDAY, so look over your words!!!!

2. Today we discussed the ending of "The Bet" and why the lawyer made the choice that he made...good discussion....you were then asked to use the RESPONSE rubric to write a half page reaction....if you did not get this to me, then GET IT TO ME!!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

1. We took the vocabulary quiz!!

2. We continued to take notes on the elements and characteristics of an EpicHero...be sure to get the notes that you missed....then, there was a worksheet with MORE stereotypes and conventions of EpicHeroes listed....you worked on this in groups to try to complete it....we will go over it quickly on Tuesday....

On Tuesday, come to class prepared to WRITE, since I want to give you a HUGE chunk of time to start writing your composition....the tentative due date is THURSDAY!

Today in class we had a lively discussion about capital punishment vs life imprisonment, solitary confinement, taking risks with money, etc...then we read the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov....if you were not here to get it, you can easily find it on line!

Be thinking about who you will write about for your paper! This papers is TENTATIVELY due next Friday, and you MOST LIKELY will have next Wednesday (I will be out) to work on it in class!

Today we went around the room and reviewed the vocabulary words you were to look up for today....then, for a participation grade, you were asked to put those words in an original sentence...these were collected for a grade for participation!!!

Compare or contrast the character of Beowulf with a modern day example of an "epic hero." Be sure to utilize specific details from the story of "Beowulf" in your response. Also, you should pay careful attention to utilize conventions, stereotypes,  and elements of epic hero stories (i.e. the notes we talked about!!!) to support your comparison or your contrast!

ENGLISH 12

Today we quickly went over elements from "A&P" and talked about perspective in the story...we also filled out a "personality inventory" on the story, and we discussed how we, as a class, related to the items checked off in the personality inventory....good job participating!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

After silent reading, we went over any questions you may have had about the test....then we took the test! When the test was done, I passed out the BOOK TALK RUBRICS and went over what is expected of you when you do your booktalk! Please see me if you didn't get one. Your booktalks are scheduled to take place on OCTOBER 31st and NOVEMBER 2nd (if we need that extra time). Remember: We will do the booktalks on that day, and I will just start at the top of the roster and we will work our way down alphabetically....
