We took the vocab test...

We went over the third part of our rubric for the personal narrative, which is SENTENCE VARIETY....we took notes on the different types, looked at the "winter storm" story and discussed how to alternate sentence beginnings, and started a sentence variety "test" that will be due on Friday...

Your FINAL piece of writing for this unit will be due on JANUARY 7. Please remember to address all three facets of the rubric!!

If you were out, get the notes you missed on sentence variety!

We went over section 1 of BEOWULF together, and I looked for you to share the information you hopefully took down in your notes about arrogance, religion, and evilness....

Today we worked together on a new vocabulary list (cultural literacy) for a test that will be next WEDNESDAY....

We continued with our personal narrative writing by talking about "voice," and filling out the "personal scavenger hunt" paper.....for next time, I would like you to come to class with a short piece of writing...here is the assignment:

PICK ONE (OR A FEW) ITEMS THAT YOU LISTED ON YOUR 'COLLECTING ACTIVITY' AND WRITE AT LEAST 1/2 PAGE ON THEM; EXPAND UPON WHAT YOU WROTE, AND ADD VOICE AND PERSONALITY TO YOUR WRITING

 We WILL be sharing this with one other person as part of a revision exercise. Thanks!

 a. the arrogance of Beowulf
 b. the references to Christianity
 c. the evilness of Grendel

I wrote the rubric for the essay on the board, and you were instructed to write down the specifics of how you will be graded

I passed back a bunch of work today. Yeay!

We worked on cover letter strategies and we took some notes on how to write effective ones!!! We used the purple grammar books.....you were told to TAKE NOTES as we talked, since they would be eventually collected as a participation grade...your job between now and class when we get back from break is to write a cover letter....use the rubric I put on the board as your guide....come to class WITH YOUR LETTER DONE so that we can workshop it together in class....I will ask you to share it with another person in class, so that you can get some peer editing done!!

Today we finished up everything to do with HEROES....we are all done!

We began a new list of "personal narrative" vocabulary words designed to help you write better letters, applications, and college essays about YOURSELF.....describe yourself in BETTER, more intelligent ways!

We started off class with our personal narrative vocab test....you had to write TEN sentences!

As a reminder, your book talks are to be presented TUESDAY

You were given the "test" on FaultyParallelism to work on and hand in on TUESDAY. You can use your notes and the practice exercises you did if you want....Remember, ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER write if the sentence is CORRECT or not....if it is NOT, then please re-write it correctly! I would like you to do all ten sentences in the first exercise, and I would like you to do the first two in the second exercise....if this doesnt make sense, please come and see me!!!!!!

We began talking about "letters" like cover letters, scholarship application letters, etc!!!!

Today in class we worked on some writing skills involving "faulty parallelism" when writing....I saw many issues and errors with this with your last composition, so we went over it....

There were some notes and examples given, and then there was a worksheet where you were asked to RE WRITE the sentences correctly....please note that on Friday, you will be given a "take home test" to do for class next week!

We discussed what Francis learned from table tennis....on a metaphorical level....

I gave you half the class to work on your book talk, since these are to be presented on FRIDAY

Describe the life lessons Francis learns from table tennis....on a metaphorical level....how is he learning MORE than JUST table tennis? THEN, explain something that has taught YOU lessons about life, growing up, etc. What have you learned from this thing??

Today we revisited some of the EpicHero stereotypes and generalizations we took notes on last time....I gave you an additional graphic organizer with EIGHT more EpicHero stereotypes on it...we did this in groups and then we discussed....

We went over the layout and formula of a good compare/contrast composition, and I gave you a double sided sheet with some good examples on it...there was a sample of a composition from last year where the student compared Beowulf with SpongeBob!

We began class with a quick writing prompt: Besides school/teachers, describe someone who has TAUGHT you an important lesson in life.....after writing, we all quickly shared what we wrote about....

We talked about HEROES through page 68 (the last reading assignment) and how "table tennis" was used as a metaphor in the story....how was ping pong a learning experience for Francis?

We began our next section of reading, which is to read page 68-81....some folks did not finish it...

Great discussion today folks! We will write on Wednesday....

ALSO, you will have HALF of class on Wednesday to work on your book talk presentation....the book talks are on FRIDAY!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today was a big day for taking notes, so if you were not here, be sure to copy the notes from a classmate!!! We took notes on genres and how they exist in our modern world....then we took notes on stereotypes/characteristics of EPIC HERO stories....this was all done so you could begin thinking of your composition (which was assigned last week or so)...

I did not tell you this in class, but your compare/contrast composition is due next TUESDAY....

We will begin the film this FRIDAY

On Wednesday, we will talk a bit more about epic hero stereotypes, and you will be given time to work on your composition.....

Today we read in HEROES from pages 24-37 in class....I read some out loud, and we discussed as we read....then you were asked to finish on your own....

You were asked to write to the following prompt after you were done reading:

Robert Cormier uses the first few chapters of the book to really introduce us to the character of Francis. Pick 2 of the following, and explain how Cormier reveals Francis in terms of: his treatment of other people, his gentleness, his love of romance, his forgiving nature, his own deformities, the way he obsesses about things, or whatever else you choose to explore...

I did not collect this today, as some were still working...please bring it for next class!

-begin the first section "the battle..." together...then you were asked to try to finish section 1 yourself in class
-you were asked to take guided notes on where the following show up in the section:
   *lines that show the greatness of Beowulf
   * lines that show references to Christianity, etc
   * lines that show the "arrogance" of Beowulf
-You were to pass in your notes at the end of class, whether you finished the reading or not

BLOCK 1 COLLEGE PREP 12 ENGLISH: This is a fantastic, SMALL class who works well independently. Please pass out the double sided “grammar test” to them. Please tell them that this does not count as a real TEST!!! It will count towards their participation grade. Please do not collect it when they are done; please ask them to bring it to class for next time and I will collect it. When students are done, they should work on reading for their “Book Talks” that are to be presented on October 24. Some may not have their books, and they can work on other homework. Thank you!

BLOCK 2 COLLEGE ENGLISH 12 : A big class, but a great group of young people. These are seniors taking a “dual enrollment” class where they are getting WHS credit AND a credit from Thomas College. For this class, please hand out the same double sided “diagnostic grammar test” that you gave to the CP class. They should work on this and TREAT IT like a test....please tell them that this is stuff they “should” know from previous years of English. Please tell them it will count as a participation grade and not a test...but they should still strive to get the best answers as they can. When they are done, please remind them to look over their BookTalk rubrics and familiarize themselves with the grading process. They can use remaining time to read their books. PLEASE NOTE: Mr McNeil and Ms Marin (the guidance counselors) delivered a presentation to the seniors during their last class. THEY MAY BE BACK TO TALK TO THE CLASS because they didn't quite finish with them last time! Just so you are aware. They are both wonderful to work with! Thank you for your understanding. One more note: Please do not collect any work from the class....I will take their “tests” next time

FOCUS TIME: Please be sure to take attendance. Students are to work quietly....

BLOCK 3 STUDY HALL: Many kids go to other places (Ms Littlefields...Ms Beckwith...the library....the art room...Mr Bolduc...etc). Please make sure each student SIGNS OUT on the book on top of the file cabinet by the door. They should also show you their pass. The kids are very good about doing this. You will most likely be left with a small group of great kids who work hard. Thanks!

Today we continued our discussion of ClaimDataWarrant by sharing what we found for our homework....then we read a good "sample paper" arguing how Peter Griffin from FAMILY GUY is the worst father of all time....we analyzed the exemplary DATA and WARRANT flow in this writing....

We analyzed an episode of THE OFFICE and chose from five different claims....we wrote data and warrants in outline form...

Over vacation, be thinking about an issue related to Maine that you would like to write about for your final research paper! Have a great break! Perhaps buy a copy of TRESPASSER by Paul Doiron!!

Today we took notes on a VERY important slide presentation on CLAIM, DATA, WARRANT; this is an argumentative writing strategy that we will use from now through the rest of the year! If you missed these notes, see me ASAP! We read a very good "example" paper written by a former student; we discussed the data and warrant used

For next time, I would like you to decide if Maine is the BEST or WORST place to live....find one piece of DATA and explain further with a warrant for it....this is NOT a formal paper or anything...it is just an exercise we will share!

BLOCK 1-ENGLISH 12: In this class, you have the pleasure of having Lisa LeClair, an EdTech, to help you. She is awesome. I briefly told her the plan, but I will write it here for you. Students should use their Greek mythology vocabulary words to do a “Google Image Writeup.” Basically, students take their vocab words and “Google Image” them....then, they choose from the SEVERAL images that come up....they pick the image that they think BEST exemplifies the word...they copy the image into a GoogleDoc, and then write a brief description of why they chose this word. Mrs LeClair can be a great help! Please tell the students to HOLD OFF on sharing them with me until I get back! Thank you. With any remaining time, students can work on their silent reading for their booktalks!

BLOCK 2-COLLEGE ENGLISH: This class was told ahead of time about the kind of stuff they would do. Please have each student get one of the GREEN “ENGLISH WORKSHOP” books that are five shelves down on my metal bookshelves. Please remind the students to be very careful with these, as some are starting to show their age/fall apart. Please remind them to NOT write in the books...thanks! Students should work, starting on page 123, doing Exercise A (please have them rewrite the whole sentence) Exercise B on page 124 (please have them rewrite the whole sentence) and Exercise A on page 67 (for this one, they can just write the words). Please do not collect any work; the students can give it to me when I see them next. Please have the students stack the green books back neatly. Please remind the students that their BOOKTALKS are to be delivered on MONDAY. Finally, please pass out the “Expository Writing” assignment to the class, and tell them that this is due next WEDNESDAY.

EXPOSITORY WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Writing About an Organization”

Write about an “organization” in your community: scouting, churches, RaiderCloset, MaineMoose, Homeless Shelter, Home for Little Wanderers, local sports teams, American Legion, drama groups, school clubs, any non-profit group, ETCETERA! Write an informative piece about this “organization.” Describe the organization. What do they do? What type of people belong? How can you join? Do they do good work? Basically, I want you to give me facts and details as you REPORT on this organization. This must be at least one full page. This is a “composition” test, and you are asked to do the following:

a. Have at least two sentences COMBINED using semicolons, colons,
commas correctly
b. Identify at least two LINKING VERBS used correctly
c. Circle all the ADJECTIVES in your composition (have at least two)
d. Use at least two APPOSITIVES in your writing!

Please use colored pencils, markers, etc to make a “key” so I know what underlined things are what (for example, underline all the linking verbs in red....circle the adjectives in green...etc)

Today we reviewed vocab by QUICKLY using five of our words in sentences--each sentence MUST contain a semicolon....we shared these verbally as part of your participation grade

We took some notes on Action Vs Linking verbs, and did the first exercise on page 106....

For Tuesday, you have two things:

1. Your vocab test on Greek mythology words
2. Your WRITTEN OUT, sentence combined, much improved paragraph that begins with "Grammar is so stupid....."

ORANGE DAY

ENGLISH 12

Today we did an open book "O.W.L." homonym test....and then we went over it....students made corrections as needed...

To prepare for our "mythology vocab" test, we chose ten words and put them in sentences.....BUT, each sentence had to contain a semicolon (since we have been talking about sentence combining in our writing...).

COLLEGE ENGLISH

First, I passed back work!

We BRIEFLY went over the "Lesson 32" sheet with semicolons and sentence combining....then we worked on the "I wanted to tell you" worksheet, where there were three paragraphs written poorly...the first two we did as a class activity...you are asked to RE-WRITE the "Thomas P. Cat" paragraph for a GRADE...re-write the paragraph in as FEW sentences as possible...combine with commas, semicolons, colons, etc!

Writing prompt: WHERE DO YOU WANT TO LIVE SOMEDAY, AND WHY?  Please be sure to include TWO sentences with commas and TWO sentences using semicolons correctly

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we went over the "exercise 4" worksheet dealing with commas....

We took notes on how to use semicolons and colons correctly in order to increase sentence fluency...

We did "Lesson 75" worksheet as a practice worksheet....we went over this in class...

"Lesson 32" (both sides) should be done for Monday's class; we will go over them and grade them!!

Your paper was due today!! We will begin the film on Wednesday!! Today we followed the black day plan: We took notes on Greek root words. Remember,, for the test, to know:

a. what the ROOT means
b. how to use the word I gave you with that root CORRECTLY
c. a word of your own choice that contains that Greek root (for example, for CHRONO, the word I gave you was CHRONOGRAPH.....but you might choose CHRONOLOGICAL for your own word....)

Today in class, you were given the first 25 minutes to finish writing your composition:

" How does the character of Mikey fit the elements of an Epic Hero story?  Use at least three examples from the film that match up with your EPIC HERO ELEMENTS worksheet "

We began a list of O.W.Ls (ongoing writing list) of homonyms and commonly misused words...we will finish the list next time.....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today, we took time to work on either finishing the book OR writing your composition! Think about what your "philosopher" and The Count share in terms of their views on:

love
forgiveness
hatred
prejudice
inclusion
patience
belonging
pride
sorrow
resentment

A good opening paragraph/thesis statement might be something such as:

The Count of Monte Cristo and the band COLDPLAY share similar views on love, patience, and forgiveness...

or

Eric Cartman and The Count are very similar in how they deal with their enemies....

Today in class we finished "The Goonies" film...we did not have much time left at the end of class to write, so I will give you the first 25 minutes of class next time to compose your stuff. Remember: You are to describe how Mikey fits the elements of an "epic hero." Use at least three examples from the film that "match up" to the worksheet I gave you!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we started with our character matching quiz....

A final study guide for chapters 46-50 was given...we went around the room and each person answered one question!

I gave some notes/discussion points on chapters 49 and 50 and explained how characters have been "FOILING" each other (see me if you don't know what that means!)

Going forward: I assigned the final composition today, so please see me if you have questions!!

I would like you to a) finish the book b) complete your composition by next THURSDAY MARCH 7 (this is also a half day)

Please note: During our next class--on Tuesday--I will give you time to work on paper, write, research, etc

Today in class we went over the "Elements of Epic Hero Stories" chart again....as we begin watching "The Goonies," think about how the character of Mikey might "fit" some of these epic hero conventions...after going over the chart, we watched about the first 45 minutes of the film...we will finish on Wednesday! The actual writing assignment is as follows:

HOW IS MIKEY AN 'EPIC HERO?' DESCRIBE HOW HE FITS AT LEAST 3 OF THE ELEMENTS WE DISCUSSED IN CLASS. PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO TOPIC SENTENCES AND PARAGRAPHS

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we started by filling out a survey for Mrs Bouchard...

I distributed a "character web" that I made in an effort to see connections among characters...

This was followed up by a "character inventory" group activity that was done and then presented to the class...

I gave a study guide/list of questions for the chapters you were to read (thru 45)...we went over them briefly....be sure you are "in the know" about these questions!!!

Your assignment for next time is to read THROUGH chapter 50....

Please also be prepared for a character matching quiz on Wednesday!!!!!! You cannot use notes on this!

**DUE TO THE SNOW DAY YESTERDAY, BLACK DAY CLASSES ARE NOW AHEAD OF ORANGE**

Today we watched the film BEOWULF for about a half hour, just so you could get the feel of it....after this, we talked about EPIC HERO STORIES and we did a "chart" with notes on things that Epic stories have in common....after vacation, we will WRITE a composition on this!!! See me if you didnt do the chart!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we did an EXHAUSTIVE character list for THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO...we went through each character and talked about what they are doing CURRENTLY and how they are all related to each other....we QUICKLY went over chapters 32-39....the assignment to read for after vacation is chapters 40-45!!!!!!

Today we took notes on a powerpoint slide show....we discussed Alexander Dumas' usage of "religious undertones" in THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO....if you were out, please be sure you get the notes from someone....we also discussed chapters 18-20 to make sure people were all set with that...for next class, please read chapters 21, 22, and 23....and, as always, PLEASE see me with questions!!

Today we took notes on the background of the BEOWULF story..then, we began reading aloud in class the section called "The battle with Grendel"....as we read, we stopped to take notes on what was happening in the section...we read up to the top of page 15....

COLLEGE ENGLISH

First of all, your BOOK TALKS have been moved to WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!!!

Today in class you were to have read chapters 7 thru 12....we took a short reading quiz on that section....then, a study guide  was handed out and we went over all the terms on the study guide....your next assignment (which will be due Friday because book talks are on Wed) will be to read chapters 13 thru 17!!!!

Today we began talking about our next unit, which is BEOWULF....we read some background info on the story and the time period....you were asked to read pages 3-8 and take notes for a participation grade! Hang on to your stuff!! Eventually it will be collected!!!

COLLEGE ENGLISH

Today we began information about our next unit: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO.. Books were not distributed today....but we did take some background information on the book, and we wrote answers to some "value brief" questions, which we then discussed!

If you are absent during this unit, you can ALWAYS ASSUME CORRECTLY that there are notes for you to make up/copy!!
