BLACK DAY

COLLEGE PREP 12

Today in class we started by taking the O.W.L. test and finishing up any remaining surveys that needed to be done....One class received their LONGEST WINTER books, but the other class did not. Some background about D-Day was discussed/shown and there is no reading assignment for this weekend...we will begin the reading of chapter 2 on Tuesday...in the meantime, you should just begin to study the 'military terms' we discussed in class....

-we did not get the books today...we will get them on Friday...

3. the assignment is to respond to one of the listed writing prompts...this response must be at least one full page, and you must show me (underline/circle/etc) adjectives and adverb usage...this is due on Thursday!

-all classes did OWL review sheet, getting practice with affect/effect and farther/further
-the test for this is on Friday

-work, for the remainder of class, on the compositions assigned last week....these are due WEDNESDAY and they must have underlined/circled/etc adverbs, adjectives, etc
-note: some popular linking verbs you might choose to use in your composition could be APPEAR, TASTE, FEEL, SEEM, and BECOME
3. We'll be starting THE LONGEST WINTER on Wednesday!

During block 1, we began our O.W.L. word list, but we had class cut short due to the fire drill and evacuation....we will finish the rest of the words list next time. During block 2 we were able to finish all the O.W.L. words and the rest of the time was used to work on the 'grammar/part of speech' compositions. BOTH CLASSES: Your compositions are due on Monday. Remember, that if you do not have it by then, you may use one of your tech days to pass it in late. See me BEFOREHAND for help with the parts of speech!!!

-begin reading story together...we did not finish...this is okay...we will finish on Thursday (I collected the stories back because I need them for another class)
3. Short Story test will be on Thursday! Remember:
-study your notes and study guides for the stories we read
-pay close attention to how we discussed literary devices in these stories
-the test will be two parted: a matching section (characters, terms, etc) and a section where you apply your knowledge of literary devices to a story of your choice

-discussion on realism stereotypes in pop culture
-work on completing 'chart' of stereotypes
-paper assigned: Compare THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE to a modern example of 'realism.' What piece of 'modern literature' (book....tv episode...film...music) is truly an example of 'realism?' Use at least three of the stereotypes on the chart we did to support your argument! You were given time to work on this at the end of class, and the paper is due on TUESDAY

-go over some of the essay...talk about conflicts involved, the idea of 'place,' etc...
3. No reading for tonight...we will begin our next two stories on Wednesday

-we will have a test on the book on Monday....you should at the very least read the SparksNotes summaries, etc. You MAY NOT use your notes on this. The Test will be true/false, matching, short answer, etc. It will also have some of our more recent RED BADGE vocab on it!! STUDY! (but, if you check this blog regularly, you probably already DO study...so great job!)
