Today in class we delivered our "confidence" speeches...then, we viewed/analyzed "Dwight's speech" on THE OFFICE--what components go into making a good, confident speech? etc.

ORANGE DAY
DUAL ENROLLMENT
Today we took a quiz on chapters 8-11 of MONTE CRISTO....then we went over the answers to this quiz (as well as the answers to any other questions you may have). ..the reading for next time is chapters 12 through 18...a study guide for 12-16 was given....we began the reading assignment together, doing most, if not all, of 12 as a class...

The assignment for today was to finish the book ETHAN FROME..we didnt take a quiz, but we went over the ending of the book...we discussed, also, the BenFranklin line "Some people die when they are 25 but are not buried until they are 85" and what the 'humorous' meaning is in this....we then discussed the difference between LIVING and SURVIVING....we then tied this back to the way the novel ended...The composition I would like you to write (due next Wed) for the ending of the book is this:
Consider the quote from Ben Franklin. What is the difference between LIVING and merely SURVIVING? In your opinion, which one is more favorable and why? You may, of course, reference any part of the book in your answer, but I am mostly looking for your own voice and intelligent opinion
Also, today, we took down a list of new vocab words...this quiz will be next Friday.

Today we finished any other speeches that we didnt get to on Friday...then we took down some notes about how to appear more confident in your speaking
-voice inflection
-eye contact
-subtle tapping/touching
-pacing among the audience/in front of the group
-dramatic pausing
For Friday, I would like you to compose a speech that is about a half-page long AND uses at least one of these 'signs of confidence' PLease have the first line of your speech be one of the following:
1. I think everyone should be able to....
2. One that that really annoys me is.....

We took the vocab test today...
We went over chapters 1 thru 6 of MONTE CRISTO today...be sure to take good notes every day! The assignment for Thursday is to read chapters 8 (we skipped 7) through 11...expect a quiz!

We went over the three types of conflict in the story and took notes...a composition was assigned and is due next Thursday: "Describe the strongest type of conflict in ETHAN FROME. Is it man vs man, man vs self, or man vs nature? Why?
